Reflection on the ISTE NETS-T Standards for Teachers

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student
learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning,
and creative processes
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual
environments

This is in my one of the most important standards for the fact that if a student is not learning for them self, then they are not learning in the right way. Students need to discover things and not just be told them. This helps them apply things that they learn to the real world and not just classroom situations. By applying them to real world situations, students can think about possible careers or majors in college. This can only be attained by the teacher knowing what learning style each student is and teach to their strengths. It also matters that the teacher knows the material and content of the subject that they are teaching.

This standard applies to what we have done in class in many different ways. Specifically, it has applied to my groups lesson plan project. We had to determine how to actively teach the students so that they learn for themselves instead of just writing notes. We had them actively participate through the smart board and through an interactive web site. First we had to know the content of what we had to teach so that we would be best prepared to teach our students and help them discover the new lesson. Last we had them take a quiz at the end so that we knew they learned what they needed to know.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to
maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become
active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using
digital tools and resources
d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology
standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching

If we do not use the newest technology in classrooms, then students can be left behind in the real world. If internet is not used in a classroom then how are students supposed to learn how to use it? It is the job of educators to teach students everything and this includes how to use technology. Because of this, it is the educators obligation to first know what technology is out there and learn how to use it themselves. Technology can also help students learn better through interaction and visual learning.

During our lesson plan planning, we tried very hard to incorporate new technology into our lesson. We used the smart board which helped for the students to interact more with the lesson. We also had every student on their own computer so that they could go at their own pace and no student had to worry about going too fast. We also do this in class every day by looking at new technology to help make things easier for when we are teaching. Each new thing we learn in class every day helps make things easier and we can then aslo teach students these tricks too.

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success
and innovation
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information
resources to support research and learning.

When teachers are making lesson plans, they need to think about how they can use technology and how it can help for student learning. Teachers need to know what relevant things are out there and bring them into the classroom. Teachers can make this better by talking to parents of students to find out what forms of technology are available at home and maybe the teachers use things in class that are not available so that students can broaden their knowledge. They are also going to have to teach technologies that are available at home so that students can work at home. This is very important to incorporate because students will learn way better this way.

For our project, we used the smart board in class for new technology but we also used the internet which we knew they could get at home. We gave them links to all the sites we used in class so they could go home and look at whatever they did not understand and do it over again. In class we also do this by receiving emails of what we did in class and also everything is put on blackboard. We learn very modern technologies and keep everything updated.
